iPhone Already Selling for Over $1000 on Ebay

Six months ago when Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone, the buzz right away was deafening. Now here we are on launch day and the buzz is at a fever pitch. Today, thousands of people across America are sitting in line, waiting for 6:00 P.M. to arrive so that they have a chance to finally buy the Apple iPhone.

The early reviews are in and it looks like the iPhone shouldn’t disappoint. Aside from the somewhat slow EDGE network, people who have had a chance to use the iPhone love it. Sure, it’s $500 or $600, but there has never been a phone quite like this before and it seems like everybody wants one. But, what if you can’t wait in line for 24 hours just to buy a phone? What if you hate sitting outside sweating, getting dehydrated in the hot summer sun?

Well, there’s always eBay right? Yep, and as with all hot gadgets, eBay is starting to see iPhones going for quite a bit of money. First, the ridiculousness started with iPhone domain names. Apparently some people who sell domain names seem to think that ticklemeiphone.com is somehow worth $50,000. I’m not even joking. Also, people are selling iPhone email addresses.

What you are probably most interested to know is how much the iPhone itself is selling for right? Well, with about 6 hours before the phone launches we’ve already seen the 8gb iPhone selling on eBay for $800-1,100. That’s anywhere from a 33-83% markup on the original price of the phone. Not a bad profit if you just want to sit in line for the next 6 hours.

Now, the real kicker is this, you will be able to buy the iPhone online from the Apple store at retail prices, so a lot of the eBay prices are going to depend on how much supply Apple can deliver in stores. If you’re looking for where you can go to buy the iPhone Apple setup a nice page here. Early rumors are saying 1 million iPhones on launch day and 2 million more on the way.

If that’s true then unless there are more than 3 million people in America who want the iPhone, eBay prices might not stay inflated for long. After all it’s a $500-600 phone. Most people get their phones for free. Then again, if Apple delivers a lot less than 1 million iPhones this weekend, demand could far outstrip supply and create a Wii-like pricing situation where sellers can keep their huge margins for weeks or months after release.

Either way, the iPhone looks like it’s going to be a big hit and the iPhone auctions have just started to get crazy. The next few days should be fun to watch. If you find any cool iPhone auctions, don’t hesitate to submit them to Fleabay.

UPDATE: eBay is taking down the iPhone auctions for the actual phones. I assume this will continue until people can prove that they have the iPhone in hand. That means all the eBay iPhone speculation should begin at 6:00 P.M. EST.
